The side edges are hemmed and the top and bottom have a fragmentary selvedge with a double blue line. The sampler consists of a flowing, naturalistic, colourful oval border worked around the Lord's Prayer and two verses from 'The morning song' taken from Dr Isaac Watts' 'Divine and Moral Songs For Children'. A deliberate attempt has been made to arrange the verse in proper linear order. Instead of the usual neglect of scansion, only the first line of the second verse fails to fit the available space. Underneath this the inscription ' Mary Nickolls Exton finished this work March ye 20 Anno Domini 1755' is worked. Some of the embroidery is incomplete; many of the small leaves and flowers near the inner margins of the floral frame are unworked and are only visible as faint outlines."}],"description":"Woollen sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross stitch.
